Endodontic Treatment: Root Canal in Kingston

A root canal at our Kingston clinic is a more involved treatment than a dental filling, and it may be a necessary treatment when infection reaches a tooth’s internal chamber (called the pulp). The pulp is connected to the root, which then travels under the gums and into your jawbone. The tissues, nerves, and blood vessels within the pulp die when they are infected by oral bacteria. Besides severe tooth pain, it can also result in the spread of infection through the tooth’s root canals.

If a tooth is damaged and its pulp is exposed, then root canal therapy can also prevent internal decay before oral bacteria infects the vulnerable tissues. During a root canal, the nerve of the tooth is examined, accessed, and removed. The remaining canals are then cleaned and disinfected. Once this is complete, the canals are then filled with a material called “gutta percha”. A dental crown may be needed afterwards to be placed over the tooth for more protection and to improve the tooth’s appearance.
